Happy Record Store Day, everyone! Go support your local music store, buy something obscure on vinyl,

The first Record Store Day I worked was Black Friday. It was big and exciting, and I loved it, but I had no idea what the April RSD was about to unload. This day changed the way I viewed my record store career in such an exciting, positive way. I knew Record Store Day was a big deal, but I had no idea how big. People camped out all night to secure their place early in the line. The amount of people who were there before we opened blew my mind. I thought it was so cool how much dedication and excitement all these people had. As the doors opened and the people flooded in, this wave of positive energy rushed in along with them. My previous retail experiences were in corporate stores. That vibe was completely different. Monster Music, an independent record store, was full of sparkling happy energy. RSD was a whole new experience. So much planning and work had built up to this moment. Outside, the parking lot was full of food trucks and even a bounce house. Inside, local bands were playing all day. Regular customers were bringing the staff food and coffee. It was the longest, busiest day ever, and I loved every second of it. It was a celebration.

Apply! If you are passionate about connecting music to people, apply at your local record store. I try to hire women but the applications are mostly male. What I look for is someone with passion, curiosity, and excitement about learning. If you have even the smallest inkling that you want to do this, dive in!

Not only is Redscroll Records a record store, it is also a record label representing some of Connecticut's most intriguing underground musicians. Being that Redscroll is also a label, the store's new space, which opened only a few years ago, hosts concerts that highlight local talent from various genres of music.

If you find yourself walking the cobblestone path of Golden Street in New London and hear music blaring from a little shop, you know you have found The Telegraph. Outside of housing the rows of new and used vinyl, the shop also doubles as a venue space with local musicians found performing in the back of the store. Some recognizable names to have performed at The Telegraph include Langhorne Slim and The Law, and Ron Gallo. Performances are announced on the store's Facebook page.

Willimantic Records is the definition of a DYI record store. From its emphasis on underground and obscure artists to niche live events, the store is made for those music listeners looking to listen to something not mainstream. The store regularly hosts concerts from local musicians, lectures, readings and film screenings.

The third annual Record Store Day took place on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The official ambassador for the event was Joshua Homme.[14] The official book of the event was Last Shop Standing: Whatever Happened to Record Shops? by Graham Jones. KCRW's Gary Calamar and Phil Gallo also released their self-published book, "Record Store Days", about independent record stores, with artist quotes provided by www.recordstoreday.com used throughout the book, and a chapter devoted to Record Store Day. NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg and New York City once again honored the day. Anything Anything with Rich Russo released a vinyl album of local bands performing on his radio show and organized a bus tour visiting New York and New Jersey record stores. Several artists made in-store appearances to mark the event: The Smashing Pumpkins promoted their new album with a Record Store Day concert at Amoeba in Hollywood, CA. Other artists to announce special appearances included Frank Black, Exene Cervenka, Angie Stone, Jason Derulo, Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Josh Ritter, HIM, Slash, Sick Puppies, Care Bears on Fire, and Emmylou Harris. Young artists showcased their talent at the national "Record Store Day: High School Battle of the Bands" contest, in which participating independent record stores each selected and entered a track recorded by a local high school band. A panel of record executives and members from the Fender Corporation judged the entrants. Nine national semi-finalists were chosen to appear on a limited edition, compilation vinyl LP of their winning songs. The grand prize winning band, SANUK, nominated by Indianapolis, Indiana record store Indy CD & Vinyl, received a package of musical gear from the Fender Corporation and recording time with Jack Ponti and Kevin "The Caveman" Shirley. The contest was sponsored by Caroline Distribution, EMI Label Services, Fender, and Fender Music Foundation.

This week the #recordstoreoftheday campaign launched in the UK to support independent music retailers. In addition to buying from a shop online or calling your local record store over the phone to order a vinyl, branded t-shirt, mug, or poster, you can also show your support by sharing a memorable purchase from your favorite independent record store on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook as part of the #recordstoreoftheday campaign. Everyday the #recordstoreoftheday campaign will spotlight a different independent record store across the country via @recordstoreotd on Twitter, @recordstoreoftheday on Instagram and the Record Store of the Day Facebook page. 2ff7e9595c
